Fourteen families at risk of losing their homes have received the house’s keys by the Emergency Board, where they will live from now on. Every month, the Barcelona Housing Consortium awards new homes to people in social and economic emergency situations. On 26th July, the alderwoman for Housing and Rehabilitation of the Barcelona City Council, Lucía Martín, welcomed the fourteen families and handed them the keys to their new homes.
The first step for families who are in these situations of social and economic emergency, is to go to the nearest Barcelona Housing Office to assasse every case and to drawn up a report. The Emergency Board is in charge of studying the files that have been issued from the Barcelona Housing Office and to allocating the homes of the Social Rental Fund. In case of there are not enough flats available to assit to the positive valued reports by the Emergency Board, homes from the ‘Empty Flats’ program will be awarded as they are incorporated into the Social Rental Fund until the Board is held the next month. The houses of the Social Rental Fund are intended for cohabitation units at risk of residential exclusion, such as being in a eviction process due to rental debt, foreclosure or dation in payment due to mortgage payments debt, in a situation of losing housing due to violence against women. Or if there are minors, elderly people or people in circumstances of helplessness, in precarious hygienic and sanitary or safety conditions living in the home.
