The Barcelona City Council, through the Municipal Institute of Housing and Renovation (IMHAB), has signed a collaboration agreement with the promoters of the WikiHousing project to build a social rental housing estate for young people in Poble-sec. To publicise the project and explain the details that make it innovative, a presentation will be held on Wednesday 20 November as part of the Conference of Innovation in Social Housing.
The City Council has awarded the plot at 38 Passeig de la Exposició to the joint venture formed by Stradle3 Constructors, Societat Orgànica +10 and IDRA Barcelona Institute, where a building with four flats of around 50 m² and a large community room will be constructed. Work will begin in early 2025 and the City Council will finance 46% of the cost.
The event will take place at Ca l’Alier (362 Pere IV Street), starting at 10.30 a.m. and will be attended by David Juárez and Luca Volpi, members of the joint venture. This will be followed by a round table on industrialised construction, which will discuss the challenges, opportunities and prospects of this type of construction, as well as what it has meant for the growth of social housing in Barcelona. The architects of the industrialised developments and professionals from the sector will participate:
- Straddle3 Constructors SL, from the WikiHousing project.
- Vivas Arquitectos, responsible for Casernes J and Marroc, 180 developments.
- Coma Arquitectura, architects of the Binèfar development.
- Cierto Studio, architects of Block A of ‘Illa Glòries’.
In order to participate, it is necessary to fill in this registration form.
A project of co-creation, innovation, experimentation, sustainability and uniqueness
The WikiHousing project was launched in 2021 after being selected by the BIT Habitat Foundation’s call for proposals ‘The proactive city’. More than 100 young people participated in the co-design and self-construction process, which allowed a complete prototype to be built on the same site. This experimental prototype will now be dismantled, expanded and reassembled into a real building that will be part of Barcelona’s public housing stock.
The block will be built with prefabricated lightweight wooden modules that will be assembled on site, a system that allows for a more ecological and faster process, reducing the time needed by more than 50% compared to traditional projects.
