Since 2015, the public housing stock in Nou Barris is increasing by approximately 1,300 apartments, with an investment by the City Council of 138 million euros. A determined commitment of the consistory that is carried out through three main mechanisms such as the construction of new developments, the purchase of estates and apartments from the private market to allocate them for public rental and the attraction of housing from the private market through programs such as the Rental Pool.
New construction is the most developed strategy over the last eight years, but unlike other districts, where it clearly has a majority weight, in the case of Nou Barris a balance can be seen in the application of the three mechanisms mentioned. This, translated into data, places the construction of 549 homes, while there are 401 homes purchased and 367 homes acquired.
In overall city terms, construction does predominate, with up to 6,047 homes, compared to 1,505 purchases and 1,784 acquisitions.
If the district figures are broken down by neighborhoods, La Trinitat Nova accumulates the most homes with 470, while at some distance are Torre Baró with 281, Ciutat Meridiana with 134 and Les Roquetes with 117. In addition, there are also El Turó de la Peira with 86 homes, La Prosperitat with 70, Verdun with 62, Porta with 37, Vilapicina and Torre Llobeta with 33, La Guineueta with 19, Canyelles with 8 and Vallbona with 7.
A district adapted to the territory
Located in the far north of the city, between the Collserola mountain range and the district of Sant Andreu, Nou Barris has thirteen neighborhoods and more than 800 hectares and is home to some 168,000 people, making it one of the largest districts in the city.
Its population density, and the eminent need for housing that its neighbors have, generates the existence of new public housing developments, such as the nine that are currently underway.
The Cirerers – Pla dels Cirerers development, in Les Roquetes, which stands out as one of the cooperative housing projects underway in the city, has already been completed, while Torre Barró has two under construction in Avda Escolapi Càncer. In addition, there are three in Palamós (two under construction and one in project), one in S’Agaró and Vía Favència, both in project. Trinitat Nova has the Aiguablava development, with land in reserve.
Nou Barris also stands out for being one of the districts that has more housing with services for people over 65 years of the whole city, with up to four current promotions of this type: Favència I, Favència II, Torre Júlia and Urrutia. And, among its different neighborhoods, there is a significant number of buildings that can be renovated and, therefore, be recipients of aid from the European Next Generation funds. Nou Barris, precisely, hosted information sessions aimed at these grants, which will soon be replicated in other districts of the city.
In parallel, on March 15 and 21, the Municipal Institute of Housing and Renovation of Barcelona also held two informative meetings, open and free, which allowed to inform neighbors about the significant growth that is occurring in housing development in Nou Barris. Both were well attended and allowed the neighbors to have a mental x-ray of the improvements that the district is experiencing in terms of housing.
For all those citizens interested in accessing subsidized housing in the city, they have at their disposal the Applicants Register, the official access route of the Barcelona City Council. It requires free prior registration, which can be formalized through three different ways: in person at any of the housing offices by appointment, by phone at 010 or online, through the registration page of applicants.
